1. My IFTA license expires December 31. How do I renew my IFTA license and obtain decals for next year?

Beginning December 1st, of each year, all licensees are required to use the online registration process to renew their license. To get started, log in with your User ID and password. Express login codes cannot be used.

2. How can I register for a User ID?

Visit our Log in page and select “Create a User ID.” Then, enter your account number, name, and express login code. You must be identified with the Board of Equalization as a business owner or an authorized user associated with the account.

If you are a tax preparer, you can request online access to your client’s accounts using form BOE-91-B.

3. I am adding a truck to my fleet. How can I obtain additional decals?

Simply use our online registration process. You must log in with your User ID and password.

4. When I complete an IFTA Renewal Application, what credentials will I obtain?

You will be mailed one (1) California IFTA license for your business. You are required to carry a copy of the license in each qualified motor vehicle in your fleet.

You will also receive two (2) decals for each qualified motor vehicle in your fleet. One decal must be placed on the exterior portion of the passenger side of the cab. The second decal must be placed in the same position on the driver's side. Decals are obtained annually at the time of renewal for all qualified motor vehicles based in California. You may obtain additional decals using our online registration process.

Your credentials are valid for the entire calendar year. You must renew your license and order new decals each year.

If you purchase more decals than are used, they should be kept for a four-year period, for audit purposes. You must keep track of all IFTA decals you purchase and receive and you must be able to provide a complete inventory of all used and unused decals.

5. When I complete a Request for Additional IFTA Decals, what credentials will I obtain?

You will receive one (1) IFTA license and two (2) decals for each additional qualified motor vehicle you add to your fleet. You must ensure that a copy of the license is kept in each qualified vehicle.

One decal must be placed on the exterior portion of the passenger side of the cab. The second decal must be placed in the same position on the driver's side.

6. I do not want to renew my IFTA license next year. How do I close out my account?

7. If I need IFTA credentials for next year and have an ownership change (ownership change includes, for example, changing from a corporation to a partnership, or from a sole proprietor to a corporation, but does not include adding or removing officers/partners), how do I change my account?

You must close out your current IFTA account then, apply online for a new IFTA account.

8. How long will it take for my online application to be processed?

If your account is active and in good standing, your application will be automatically approved upon submission. You will be able to print a copy of your IFTA license and a 30- day temporary decal permit for each qualified motor vehicle listed in your application. Your license and decals will be sent to your mailing address within five (5) business days.

9. What might delay processing of my Renewal/Additional Decal Application?

The following are the most common reasons your application may be delayed:

  • Your account is delinquent because you did not file the required tax returns
  • You owe tax
  • Your account is revoked

The BOE will issue your IFTA credentials once you have filed the required returns and/or paid the taxes owed. If your account has been revoked, you must pay a $50.00 reinstatement fee, and you may be required to post a security deposit.

10. My IFTA account is currently closed. How do I reopen my account?
