Are you a business owner who is feeling overwhelmed by tax laws and reporting requirements? Perhaps you're unsure if you can claim exemptions, or maybe you need help figuring out how Social Security affects your business. Well, help is on the way. Claude Parrish, Member, State Board of Equalization (BOE), announced today that 19 government taxing authorities will team up on Friday, October 18th, at Point Loma Nazarene University (3900 Lomaland Drive in San Diego) to offer a one-day, free tax seminar to San Diego County businesses. The participating government agencies will have representatives, information booths, and workshops tailored to suit the needs of the small business owner.

The San Diego County Small Business Tax Information Day will begin at 9 a.m. with opening remarks by BOE Board Member Claude Parrish. From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. there will be informal sessions and workshops. Some of the topics to be covered include:

  • Sales and Use Tax Return Preparation
  • Employee vs. Independent Contractor
  • Federal Employment Tax Responsibilities
  • How Social Security Affects Small Businesses
  • State Income Taxes and Small Business
  • The Audit and Appeals Process

Participating agencies include the BOE, Cal/OSHA, Employment Development Department, Franchise Tax Board, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Internal Revenue Service, San Diego County Assessor, San Diego City Treasurer, Secretary of State, Social Security Administration, Small Business Institute of Point Loma University, and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
