Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

An introductory video to the Valuation of Personal Property and Fixtures Using Assessors' Handbook Section 581 (Equipment Index, Percent Good, and Valuation Factors)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free income tax preparation to individuals and families with household incomes of less than $52,000. VITA volunteers have been trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and are available to assist at locations throughout California.

Eligible individuals may qualify for as much as $6,044 from the Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers should bring proof of identification including social security cards, wage and earning statement(s) from employers, interest and dividend statements from banks, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, and a copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available.

The VITA program helps low-to-moderate income families and individuals collectively bring home millions of dollars, enormously benefiting communities throughout California.

To get more information about VITA services in your community, call the IRS VITA hotline at 1-800-906-9887.

You may also visit the IRS website to learn more about the VITA program or to find a VITA location near you.

Information about VITA and other BOE taxpayer events is available on my events calendar.
