Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Services information and resources proved to be a significant boost to hundreds of citizens in the 4th Board of Equalization District. Offerings included free tax-filing assistance, provided by certified tax preparers, which helped low and moderate income individuals and families qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Representatives are available to assist with low cost health and dental insurance, job preparation assistance, food and nutrition services, as well as discounted home telephone phone service. Language assistance is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
Free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in 4th Board of Equalization district offices helps low and moderate income individuals and families obtain their federal Earned Income Tax Credits. The Board of Equalization's district offices provide Free Tax Preparations for all those who qualify. In addition, Board Member Horton also hosted three Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Services events which provided free VITA and information on a myriad of private and public services. The VITA site will provide a safe, accessible location for taxpayers to get assistance in preparing and filing their state and federal income tax returns, at no cost.
Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Services Days were a cooperative effort with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Franchise Tax Board, and the State Board of Equalization, in partnership with various public and private agencies, to provide income tax assistance and information on services to low and moderate income individuals, the disabled, and the elderly. Volunteers were trained to prepare basic income tax returns at VITA sites and returns took up to 30 minutes to prepare.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) lifts an average of 6.6 million Americans above the poverty line each year. However, over 25% of those qualifying families do not apply for the credit. Board Member Horton's Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Services Days assisted low income families who are not taking advantage of the 1.5 billion dollars in available earned income tax and other credits. Families and individuals whose household income is below $51,000, qualify for the free income tax service.
At a local level, these returns helped stimulate the economy by placing disposable income in the hands of those low income families and allowing them to spend their tax savings in their own communities. In addition to tax preparation, the goal was to have other much needed family resources available at the event. These events were open to the public except for the tax preparation service which was by appointment only. Approximately 2,000 residents received our services which generated $1 million in income tax refunds for the applicable households.
Free Tax preparations will take place at each of the 4th Board of Equalization district offices located in Culver City, Norwalk, Van Nuys and West Covina.
