HORTON: Members, let us reconvene the 6 meeting of the Board of Equalization. 7 Ms. Richmond, what is our next item? 8 MS. RICHMOND: Our next item is a special 9 presentation to Ms. Regina Valaine Evans-Jarrett. 10 MR. HORTON: Thank you, Ms. Richmond. 11 To the Members, to the public, as well as all 12 of our staff and team members, it is an honor for the 13 Board of Equalization to recognize the stellar work of, 14 uh, my Chief of Staff. But she's also been extremely 15 supportive in a number of areas to the entire Board of 16 Equalization in -- which is indicative of a character to 17 share and to be of value to all of those that she comes 18 in contact with; in some regards, um, spending more time 19 with other Board Members than she spent with my office. 20 But to the benefit, I think, of myself and the entire 21 Board. 22 So we want to recognize her. We'd ask that she 23 come forward and provide us an opportunity to take a 24 picture with her, if will -- if she would. 25 And here is a -- the resolution. I just wanted 26 to show it to everyone. But the resolution says just a 27 lot of wonderful things about a fabulous person, uh, 28 and, um -- and it sort of codifies a stellar career from 3 1 serving with nonprofits, as well as various different 2 governors in different capacities here at the California 3 State Board of Equalization. 4 So, uh, without further adieu, we -- Members, 5 if you would join me. 6 But I first -- 7 MR. RUNNER: Comments first? 8 MR. HORTON: -- would like to, uh, call upon 9 Mr. Runner. 10 MR. RUNNER: Okay. Thank you. Thank you. 11 Um, you get -- you're just going to hide over 12 there behind the column as we talk, is that the plan? 13 We won't make you come front and center to hear all of 14 this. 15 Regina, listen, I want to -- we want to express 16 our -- our appreciation for your great work, your 17 availability. Um, you know, there are just some 18 challenging issues you must face working with a guy like 19 this, and you have overcome them all in stellar 20 fashion. 21 MR. HORTON: I am a workaholic. 22 MR. RUNNER: And we, uh -- we're going to miss 23 you, but, uh, blessings to your -- to your new 24 endeavors. And I know it's been a struggle for you in 25 terms of just the commute and the process away from 26 home. And so, I'm glad that you'll be able to at least 27 make that part of your life a little easier. 28 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: Thank you. Thank you so 4 1 much. 2 MR. HORTON: Member Yee. 3 MS. YEE: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. 4 I actually have the distinct honor of saying I 5 knew you when. And, uh, I have, uh, known Regina for 25 6 years now. 7 MS. STEEL: Wow. 8 MS. YEE: We started together and started out 9 as Senate Fellows in the California State Legislature 10 around that time and, uh, had the distinct pleasure, 11 each of us, of serving under, now retired, Congresswoman 12 Diane Watson. 13 And I just want to say to Regina she's been a 14 mentor. She, uh, really does sacrifice a lot for her 15 service to the public, and, uh, I just want to thank you 16 for that. And also thank you for the, uh, extension of, 17 uh, assistance and certainly really enhancing the 18 camaraderie among the Chief Deputies of each of our 19 respective offices. 20 Thank you. 21 MR. HORTON: Member Steel. 22 MS. STEEL: You know, Regina is really special 23 because she lives in my district and (inaudible) -- but 24 we going to miss you so much. 25 Thank you for all that work and helped my 26 office and worked together. But at the same time, 27 whoever replace you has to fill the really big shoe, and 28 we going to miss you a lot. 5 1 Thank you. 2 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: Thank you. 3 MR. HORTON: Member Mandel. 4 MS. MANDEL: We're going to miss you. And, uh, 5 make sure that whoever comes behind you knows how to 6 keep this man in line. 7 Anyway, good luck. 8 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: Thank you. 9 MR. HORTON: Yes. This is actually a 10 celebration, Members. I mean, uh, she is moving on to 11 a -- what I believe to be a prestigious position, but 12 also a very, uh, well welcome opportunity. 13 Often times your life skills and life 14 experiences don't necessarily coincide with your 15 profession. And it's a wonderful, wonderful thing when 16 it does. 17 I don't know who it was, but someone once said 18 that, you know, when I can go to work and it's something 19 I enjoy, it's in a place where I enjoy to be. Not to 20 say this isn't it. But when -- you know, Regina will be 21 now located in San Diego where she resides, where the 22 majority of her family is as well. And so, you know, 23 it's difficult to tell a workaholic to slow down when 24 there's so much -- when the trail in front of you offers 25 so many opportunities to be of assistance and be 26 helpful. So, the only way you can do that is make sure 27 that the trail runs one place and that's back to home. 28 And her trail goes back home, she can continue to serve 6 1 the people of the State of California. 2 And so, thank you so very much, Regina. Please 3 accept this token of our appreciation. 4 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: Thank you. 5 (Taking picture.) 6 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: I just want to say to all 7 of -- first, to Mr. Horton. 8 MR. HORTON: Well, you have ten minutes to make 9 your presentation. 10 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: First to Mr. Horton, I just 11 want to thank you for the privilege and the opportunity 12 to serve you. I consider, as I've shared with you, this 13 opportunity a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And thank 14 you so, so very much. 15 And when you left the reception the other 16 night, I told everybody that, um, somewhere along the 17 lines I'll come back and join you when you become 18 Governor of the State of California. 19 MR. HORTON: Oh, no. Oh, no. 20 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: And I want to say to the 21 rest of the Board -- 22 MR. HORTON: Take that off the record. 23 MS. EVANS-JARRETT: I want to say to the rest 24 of the Board, um, thank you so much. It's been 25 certainly a privilege and an honor, and I have truly 26 enjoyed working with your teams. 27 And I also want to say, to the Executive 28 Director and Ms. Cazaad in her absence, that it's been a 7 1 pleasure working with the deputies. We have an 2 unbelievable organization that has amazing people 3 serving here every single day. And it is those 4 individuals that makes all of our work easier. And I 5 just want to thank you, and I've enjoyed every bit of 6 it. 7 And best wishes to everyone. Thank you. 8 MR.
