HORTON: Ms. Richmond. 6 MS. RICHMOND: Our next item is the 7 Administrative Session. Item N, the Consent Agenda. 8 N1, Board Resolution for Jan K. Ishii. 9 MR. HORTON: Oh. 10 Members, let's take up the consent agenda. 11 MS. YEE: Uh, move approval. 12 MR. HORTON: It's been moved -- move approval 13 of consent agenda by Member Yee. Second by Member 14 Runner. 15 Discussion, Members? 16 MS. YEE: Just, uh, extending deepest 17 sympathies to the family. 18 MS. STEEL: I -- 19 MR. HORTON: Member Steel. 20 MS. STEEL: I think Board of Equalization we 21 have a lot of staff and, you know, we lose, um -- it 22 seems like lose one of the members once in a while. And 23 it's really sad to, you know, let people go, uh, from 24 our lives. And at the same time that, you know, I just 25 feel really bad for his family and especially his wife 26 Barbara and their son. 27 So -- 28 MR. HORTON: I, too, want to add my condolence 3 1 to the family. 2 Um, Jan Ishii was just an outstanding human 3 being. I spent, uh, a lot of time with him. Arguably, 4 uh -- he was actually my first supervisor, uh, at the 5 Board of Equalization at the age of 18. Uh, I started 6 here as an intern. I was just telling the story, in 7 fact. And so this sort of slipped my mind. 8 Uh, Tom Okato (phonetic) had recommended me to 9 Jan Ishii, uh, as a promising student which I didn't 10 believe but they did. And I interviewed with Jan, and 11 he hired me as a student intern and, of course, 12 encouraged me, uh, through my career to continue to look 13 at the Board of Equalization as a -- as a, uh, career 14 and as a place to, uh -- to, uh, grow and prosper. 15 And so, arguably, I would not be before you 16 today if it wasn't for Jan Ishii and others that are 17 like him. And so I -- not only do I, uh, have a deep 18 debt of gratitude to this, uh, awesome, just awesome, 19 individual, he will be missed. 20 ---oOo--- 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 4 1 REPORTER'S CERTIFICATE 2 3 State of California ) 4 ) ss 5 County of Sacramento ) 6 7 I, KATHLEEN SKIDGEL, Hearing Reporter for the 8 California State Board of Equalization certify that on 9 July 25, 2012 I recorded verbatim, in shorthand, to the 10 best of my ability, the proceedings in the 11 above-entitled hearing; that I transcribed the shorthand 12 writing into typewriting; and that the preceding pages 1 13 through 4 constitute a complete and accurate 14 transcription of the shorthand writing. 15 16 Dated: August 16, 2012 17 18 19 ____________________________ 20 KATHLEEN SKIDGEL, CSR #9039 21 Hearing Reporter 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 5
