HORTON: Ms. Olson, I would ask that, um -- 6 Mr. Jackson, I believe there's a few extra questions 7 that the Members may very well have on this matter. 8 Would you please come forward again, if you will. 9 Sir, have a seat. 10 Now, I should certainly be one to speak, but it 11 appears that your beard's getting a little grayer these 12 days; why is that? 13 MR. JACKSON: Thirty-three years here. 14 MR. HORTON: Thirty-three years with the State 15 of California. Well -- and particularly with the Board 16 of Equalization. 17 And it is rare, ladies and gentlemen, that we 18 have such a distinguished individual within our 19 organization. Certainly every employee within this 20 organization is unique. And their retirement, as 21 Mr. Jackson has decided to retire, will leave a void in 22 our organization as well as in our minds as we interact 23 with these individuals and become friends and part of a 24 larger family called the Board of Equalization. 25 But to the extent that a thank you will suffice 26 after 33 years, uh, we certainly want to extend our 27 appreciation for your dedication and commitment to this 28 organization and the people of the State of California 3 1 and your service. 2 And we wish you just enormous amount of 3 happiness and joy as you continue. And don't hesitate 4 to drive by. If you're of a mind to stop in, we 5 certainly welcome you and look forward to seeing you in 6 any capacity that you so desire. 7 Thank you again for 33 years. It's exciting. 8 Thank you. 9 MS. YEE: Mr. Chairman. 10 MR. JACKSON: Thank you. 11 MR. HORTON: Member Yee. 12 MS. YEE: Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman. 13 I, too, want to add my congratulations to 14 Mr. Jackson. And, more importantly, to extend my thanks 15 to you for all of the support that you've given to me 16 and to my staff over the years. And, uh, I know this 17 whole valuation process involving state assessees has 18 some pretty untenable timelines associated with it. And 19 I have never seen you -- never, ever seen you take the 20 stress of these deadlines personally. And, uh, that's 21 to be commended, just some very, very tough working 22 conditions relative to this program. 23 So thank you very much for always being 24 available as a resource. 25 MR. JACKSON: Thank you. 26 MR. HORTON: Member Steel. 27 MS. STEEL: Thank you very much. 28 When I came in 2007, um, this property tax 4 1 assessment was the toughest one for me. And it's very 2 complicated. And Mr. Jackson was there, tried to 3 explain to me from the beginning, from the bottom, that 4 I didn't understand anything about it. 5 And thank you very much your patience, and 6 thank you very much for your support in helping me go 7 through. Now I learn just little more. Still it's 8 complicated. 9 We going to miss you so much. But 10 congratulations. 11 MR. JACKSON: Thank you. 12 MR. HORTON: Mr. Jackson. 13 MR. JACKSON: What I'd like to say is that it's 14 been wonderful working 33 years for the Board. I 15 started back in the Oakland office and moved around 16 through sales tax and excise and ended up in property 17 tax. And I've worked with some very wonderful people -- 18 I mean, everybody I've met -- and that's what's kept me 19 here. 20 So you will always hear me say this, that the 21 Board is one of the best places to work, it has been. 22 I've had friends who've worked at some of the other 23 agencies, but I've always thought that all the managers 24 that -- as I was one of the rank and file and moved up, 25 but it's been really truly wonderful. And I'm glad I 26 had that experience. 27 MR. HORTON: Thank you again. 28 MR. JACKSON: Thank you. 5 1 2 REPORTER'S CERTIFICATE 3 4 State of California ) 5 ) ss 6 County of Sacramento ) 7 8 I, KATHLEEN SKIDGEL, Hearing Reporter for the 9 California State Board of Equalization certify that on 10 November 16, 2011 I recorded verbatim, in shorthand, to 11 the best of my ability, the proceedings in the 12 above-entitled hearing; that I transcribed the shorthand 13 writing into typewriting; and that the preceding pages 1 14 through 5 constitute a complete and accurate 15 transcription of the shorthand writing. 16 17 Dated: December 12, 2011 18 19 20 ____________________________ 21 KATHLEEN SKIDGEL, CSR #9039 22 Hearing Reporter 23 24 25 26 27 28 6
