Last year taxpayers filed more than 3,400 appeals with the Board of Equalization (BOE) on issues ranging from sales and use tax to homeowner and renter assistance. BOE has created an online video to assist appellants who will represent themselves during their hearings.

The video, which is only 8 ½ minutes long, is a quick resource rather than a lengthy overview. Its purpose is to assist those taxpayers new to the appeal and hearing process.

The video will help you understand how to prepare for the hearing and make sure your voices are heard. In creating the video, we consulted key personnel in the Sales and Use Tax and Legal Departments and the Communications Office to find the most important points to communicate.

It offers a breakdown of BOE literature provided to appellants, explains the hearing schedule, and directs taxpayers to other helpful BOE resources. It even highlights sections of BOE literature as those sections are discussed.

In addition, the video includes informal advice, such as visual guides to using the microphone and information on how to make the best use of the time provided in the hearing.
