Clerical Positions

The classifications described below are entry-level classifications used by the Board of Equalization that are open to persons without prior State civil Service.

Office Assistant

Office Assistants, under close supervision as trainees, learn a variety of general clerical duties such as word processing, filing, routing mail, and ordering records.  Open examinations for the Office Assistant is administered by the State Personnel Board.  For more information, visit the CalHR’s website.

Office Technician

Office Technicians may serve in positions such as secretaries to division or section chiefs.  Duties may also include serving as receptionist, tracking attendance for a division or section, independently preparing correspondence, and setting up filing systems.  Open examinations for the Office Technician is administered by the State Personnel Board.  For more information, visit the CalHR’s website.

Key Data Operator

Key Data Operators, under close supervision, perform key entry of information from returns, schedules, revenue documents and reports from all tax and fee programs administered by the Board of Equalization.  Open examinations for the Key Data Operator is administered by the State Personnel Board.  For more information, visit the CalHR’s website.

Tax Technician I

Tax Technicians perform technical work such as registration, maintenance, close-out, and security requirements of tax accounts and property statements; process escrow releases; and provide routine advisory services to taxpayers and other governmental agencies.  Open examination for the Tax Technician I is administered online.  Please click here to review the Examination Bulletin for the Tax Technician I.

Student Assistant / Graduate Student Assistant

Student Assistants learn the policies, procedures, and business techniques of various programs administered by the Board of Equalization, and under close supervision, performs tasks such as computation, programming, and analysis of data.  Graduate Student Assistants gain practical experience by assisting staff with performing research; analyzing and evaluating data; and preparing recommendations, reports and correspondence.

Student Assistant and Graduate Student Assistant jobs do not require a test.  Interested candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited college and can directly submit their applications to the address indicated on vacancy announcements.
